Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Portland OR
259 AM PDT Sun Apr 27 2025

.SYNOPSIS...Cooler and drier across the area today in the wake
of a departing system over California. Onshore flow brings
benign conditions and seasonable temperatures through the start
of the week. A passing front will bring a chance for rain
across the area Monday night into Tuesday, but do not expect any
significant precipitation amounts. Weather briefly turns warmer
and drier again Wednesday and Thursday before another system
returns cooler and cloudier conditions to the region late next
week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Now through Tuesday Night...Any lingering shower
activity has tapered off across the area this morning as the
upper low which had been sitting south of the region for the
past few days departs into the Great Basin. This will usher in
drier northerly flow over the Pacific Northwest today, yielding
benign, partly cloudy conditions with afternoon highs near
seasonal norms in the low to mid 60s. Expect much of the same
to start the work week as onshore strengthens on Monday atop a
weak ridge nosing into the region from the Pacific. A weak
embedded shortwave and attendant surface front will cross the
region and bring the next chance of rain Monday night into
Tuesday. Model QPF with this system continues to look rather
meager, with most areas staying below a tenth of an inch. The
best chances for higher amounts will be over far northern
coastal areas, with the NBM depicting about a 50% chance for a
quarter inch over parts of Pacific County but only around a 20%
chance for Astoria and the north Oregon Coast. Daytime highs
generally remain in the low to mid 60s inland and the 50s along
the coast through Tuesday. Strong onshore flow will also favor
gusty west winds through the Columbia River Gorge, gusting as
high as 25-35 mph at times in Hood River County. /CB

.LONG TERM...Wednesday through Saturday...Warmer and dryer
weather returns to the region on Wednesday as a ridge of high
pressure builds overhead and sends temperatures back into the
70s in the interior lowlands. Latest guidance continues to
suggest Thursday will be the hottest day of the week, with the
NBM indicating an 80-90% probability to reach 80 degrees in the
Portland Metro and a 40-60% chance across the rest of the
interior valley locations. Coastal locations will notably remain
cooler as marine layer influences hold temperatures in those
locations down in the 60s. The period of warm weather will be
relatively short lived as WPC ensembles clusters show good
agreement int he ridge shifting east by Friday and opening the
door for the next upper level trough approaching the region.
This will bring another round of cooler and wetter weather to
the area from Friday into next weekend. /CB

.AVIATION...Expect mostly VFR conditions for inland terminals
through the TAF period, with the exception of potential MVFR
CIGs between 12-18Z Sunday (20-40% chance of MVFR CIGs). Chances
for such conditions look to be lower to the south (around KEUG).
Winds will be light and southwesterly to northwesterly through the
TAF period. Between 00-06Z Monday, a few terminals could see
northwesterly to westerly winds around 8-10 kt.

As for coastal terminals, expect mostly MVFR conditions through
the TAF period. KAST and KONP have differing probabilities, with a
60-80% chance of MVFR conditions at KAST and a 30-50% chance at
KONP. KTMK looks to have MVFR probabilities between the two.
Expect northwesterly winds around 6 to 8 kt through the TAF
period.

PDX AND APPROACHES...Expect mostly VFR conditions through the TAF
period, except for a 20-30% chance of MVFR CIGs between 12-20Z
Sunday. Expect winds at or below 8 kt to remain mostly westerly
to northwesterly.

&&

.MARINE...High pressure over the northeast Pacific continues to shift
inland, resulting in winds and seas easing through this morning.
Expect Small Craft Advisory conditions to come to an end by this
afternoon, around 2 PM. The start of next week looks to be rather
quiet, with seas around 5 to 7 feet and mostly northwesterly
winds at or below 10 kt.

The Columbia River Bar is also experiencing Small Craft Advisory
conditions in the form of steep ebb chop and will come to end by
8 AM today. Could see more steep ebb chop tomorrow morning, with
an ebb current of 7.35 kt and seas 7 to 8 feet.
